The Role of Attitude in an Exercise Routine

By Christine Harrell

The people who say they love their exercise routine and enjoy working out really do see their fitness routine as a passion and a hobby. What is the relationship between the two? A lot, according to several studies performed on this concept in recent years. They found that getting going on your favorite workout improves your entire body and mind.

An Exercise Routine And Feeling Happy

Depression is a common and serious problem in today's society. Recent research has shown that a home fitness program can significantly improve this disorder as well as a few other problems. As you start moving, the amount of endorphins in your body increases. This is the same hormone responsible for making you feel happy. With enough of these powerful little substances in your body, it can increase your pain tolerance and further heighten your level of enjoyment.

A Home Fitness Program And Cortisol

When your body experiences a physical or mental stress, it produces high levels of a substance known as cortisol. This substance irritates and adds to physical ailments such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and cancer. It also affects your skin and vital organs causing them to age. While an exercise routine does increase cortisol in the short-term, continuing with physical activity will reduce the amount your body is able to produce. It reduces stress and all of the physical and mental issues associated with it.

Physical Activity And Cold Weather

The winter blues are a common occurrence for many people around the world. When the temperature drops and the ground is full of ice and snow, workouts generally cool off with it. On top of the feeling of restlessness and housebound feelings this creates, the lack of movement also decreases testosterone. Studies have found that adding trips to an indoor pool or any other kind of movement brings testosterone levels back up preventing the onset of this seasonal depression.

Workouts And Confidence

A recent study involving teenage girls looked directly at the relationship of movement, physical ability, and confidence. They found that when the girls were able to complete a tough program or overcome a specific challenge, their confidence level improved dramatically. This resulted in an increased desire to continue with physical activities and experienced less exertion. The improved self-confidence also aided the girls with other life goals and fought off poor self-images.

Knowing this, there is no surprise that so many people choose home fitness program such as P90X, as their workout of choice. Physical activity improves your mental and emotional well-being, and your attitude increases the motivation for your exercise routine. If you have been feeling a little stressed or down lately, why not try using a workout to treat it and start feeling like you again!
